PART-TIME CHILDREN’S PROGRAMMER
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Branch Librarian, the Children’s programmer develops and implements a full range of services for children and youth. The Children’s programmer will also perform as a Circulation Assistant by providing service to patrons at the Circulation desk.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Plans and conducts programs for pre-school and school-age children, including young adults.
Plans and conducts summer reading program and other special programs.
Provides written statistical information to supervisor.
Attends conferences and workshops as appropriate.
Performs circulation duties.
Plans and creates displays to encourage reading.
Provides reader advisory services.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature.
Ability to create and implement creative programming for children.
Ability to learn standard library tasks readily and adhere to prescribed routines.
Ability to work well under pressure.
Self-starter who can work without supervision.
Dependable.
Patience, tact, and a good sense of humor.
Knowledge of the Blue Ridge Regional Library policies and procedures.
Ability to maintain a good working relationship with public/staff.
Knowledge of the Community
Computer literacy or willingness and ability to complete computer training satisfactorily.
Oral communication skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience working with children.
Experience working with the public or some college experience.

Under the supervision of the Branch Librarian, the Library/Circulation Assistant serves patrons at the Circulation desk and provides support for library programming and other activities. Schedule may include Saturday and evening hours.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Assists with planning and conducting programming for library patrons of all ages.
Assists with summer reading program and other special programs.
Provides written statistical information to supervisor.
Attends conferences and workshops as appropriate.
Performs circulation duties and answers reference questions.
Plans and creates displays to encourage reading.
Provides reader advisory services.
Organizes and shelves library materials.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Full-time Cataloger - Martinsville
The Blue Ridge Regional Library is seeking candidates for the position of Cataloger for the library system who are highly motivated and support BRRL’s mission to provide free, friendly service and access to timely materials that educate, enrich, and entertain the entire community.
This full-time position performs processing and preparing materials for circulation and entering data into an integrated library system database for the Blue Ridge Regional Library for maximum accessibility. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Collection Development Manager.
Responsibilities and Duties:
· Catalog library materials, including books, CD audiobooks, DVDs, etc.
· Edit, claim, and download from OCLC bibliographic and authority records.
· Maintain the Authority Files database.
· Responsible for the continuity and maintenance of the local database.
· Plans for routine upgrades of OCLC hardware and software.
· Meets with vendors when reasonable.
· Maintains liaison with ILS and OCLC personnel.
· Keep abreast of ILS upgrades affecting cataloging.
· Keep abreast of current cataloging trends at the Library of Congress and OCLC.
· Perform original cataloging of library materials as needed.
· Load e-resource records as needed.
· Attends conferences and workshops as appropriate.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Knowledge of professional cataloging principles including: MARC formats, AACR2 and RDA cataloging rules, Dewey Decimal system, Library of Congress subject headings, and Library of Congress and OCLC Authority Control.
· Knowledge of OCLC policies and procedures.
· Ability to adapt standard usage to the needs of the library.
· Ability to plan, implement, and maintain the bibliographic and authority parameters for the library’s integrated library system.
· Ability to modernize bibliographic information for the online database.
· Self-starter who can work without supervision.
· Written and oral communication skills.
· Ability to maintain good working relationships with other staff.
· Good judgement.
Education and Experience:
· Bachelor’s degree and computer experience.
· Cataloging experience in a library setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Master’s Degree in Library Science/Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited school
· Eligibility for certification by the Library of Virginia
· Knowledge of current cataloging trends and topics
