FULL-TIME CIRCULATION ASSISTANT

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Branch Librarian or Circulation Supervisor, the Circulation Assistant performs varied clerical and technical tasks in providing service to patrons at the circulation desk.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Checks library materials in and out according to established rules and procedures Answers patrons' directional and procedural inquiries

Prepares and issues new or replacement library cards

Answers telephone and refers calls to appropriate person or department Collects fines and other library fees

Assists patrons in selection and location of books, videos, periodicals, and other library materials Processes requests for reserved materials

Maintains periodical collection (except at headquarters library) Organizes returned library items on book trucks for shelving Responsible for opening and closing procedures of the library as needed Supervises page in the absence of the supervisor

Shelves library materials in the absence of a page Prepares notices for mailing

Assists with window displays, arts, and crafts as needed Works in other branches as needed

Attends conferences and workshops as appropriate Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to learn standard library tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed routines Ability to work well under pressure

General knowledge of reader interests, books, and authors Self-starter who can work without supervision

Good judgment

Knowledge of Blue Ridge Regional Library policies and procedures Ability to maintain good working relationships with public/staff Patience, tact, and a good sense of humor

Computer literacy or willingness and ability to complete computer training satisfactorily Oral communication skills

Knowledge of community

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent

Experience in working with the public or some college experience

ELECTRONIC RESOURCES ASSISTANT

 

POSITION SUMMARY

 

Under the supervision of the Electronic Resources Supervisor, the Electronic Resources Assistant provides assistance and backup in maintaining the library’s technology programs.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Assists with strategic planning activities and goal setting Assists with yearly and long-term budget requests

Repairs and maintains the library’s technology infrastructure Supports operating systems and applications software Assists with the library’s automation system

Troubleshoots error situations

Acts as liaison with vendor as needed Assists with employee training and support Modifies/updates the library’s Web page

Works with graphics, specialized printing, and digital photography Assists with the library’s messaging system

Creates user e-mail accounts Handles Active Directory integration

Provides employee training/support in using e-mail Assists with intranet development

Maintains vigilance concerning security Monitors threats from patrons and the Internet

Assists with efforts for patch/hotfix maintenance, virus protection and malware eradication Implements training programs for patrons and staff

Develops personal skills Maintains currency with hardware

Maintains currency with OS and general software enhancements Analyzes emerging technologies

Attends conferences/workshops

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of personal computers including hardware support, repairs, OS support, and application software

Knowledge of servers and server operating systems Knowledge of local and wide-area networking technologies Ability to work in a backup role with:

Hardware vendors

Library automation vendors Application software vendors Public telephone companies

 

Excellent written and oral communication skills Excellent organizational skills

Ability to build relationships with community and staff
